Janis
Lynn Joplin (Port Arthur, 19 de janeiro de 1943 – Los Angeles, 4 de
outubro de 1970) foi uma cantora e compositora estadunidense. Tornou-se
conhecida no final dos anos 60 como vocalista da banda Big Brother and
the Holding Company, e posteriormente como artista solo.

Janis
nasceu na cidade de Port Arthur, Texas, nos Estados Unidos. Ela
cresceu ouvindo músicos de blues, tais como Bessie Smith e Big Mama
Thornton e cantando no côro local. Joplin concluiu o curso secundário na
Jefferson High School em Port Arthur no ano de 1960, e foi para a
Universidade do Texas, na cidade de Austin, onde começou a cantar blues
e folk com amigos.
Cultivando uma atitude rebelde, Joplin se vestia como os poetas da geração beat, mudou-se do Texas para San Francisco em 1963, morou em North Beach, e trabalhou como cantora folk. Por volta desta época seu uso de drogas começou a aumentar, incluindo a heroína. Janis sempre bebeu muito em toda a sua carreira, e sua preferida era a bebida Southern Comfort. O uso de drogas chegou a ser mais importante para ela do que cantar, e chegou a arruinar sua saúde.
Depois de retornar a Port Arthur para se recuperar, ela voltou para San Francisco em 1966, onde suas influências do blues a aproximaram do grupo Big Brother & The Holding Company, que estava ganhando algum destaque entre a nascente comunidade hippie em Haight-Ashbury. A banda assinou um contrato com o selo independente Mainstream Records e gravou um álbum em 1967. Entretanto, a falta de sucesso de seus primeiros singles fez com que o álbum fosse retido até seu sucesso posterior.
O destaque da banda foi no Festival Pop de Monterey, com uma versão da música “Ball and Chain” e os marcantes vocais de Janis. Seu álbum de 1968 Cheap Thrills fez o nome de Janis.
Ao sair da banda Big Brother, Janis formou um grupo chamado Kozmic Blues Band, que a acompanhou em I Got Dem Ol’ Kozmic Blues Again Mama! (1969). O grupo se separou, e Joplin formou então o Full Tilt Boogie Band. O resultado foi o álbum Pearl (1971), lançado após sua morte, e que teve como destaque as músicas “Me and Bobby McGee” (de Kris Kristofferson), e “Mercedes-Benz”, escrita pelo poeta beatnik Michael McClure.
Janis Joplin no Brasil.
Janis Joplin esteve no Brasil em fevereiro de 1970, na tentativa de se livrar do vício da heroína. Durante a sua estada, fez topless em Copacabana, bebeu muito, cantou em um bordel, foi expulsa do Hotel Copacabana Palace por nadar nua na piscina e quase foi presa, pelas suas atitudes na praia, consideradas “fora do normal”.
Como era época de carnaval, tentou participar de um desfile de escola de samba, porém teve acesso negado por um segurança que desconfiou de sua vestimenta hippie. Especula-se que, antes de voltar para os Estados Unidos, teve uma breve relação amorosa com o roqueiro brasileiro Serguei.
Morte.
Janis Joplin morreu de overdose de heroína em 4 de outubro de 1970, em Los Angeles, Califórnia, com apenas 27 anos. Foi cremada no cemitério-parque memorial de Westwood Village, em Westwood, Califórnia, e numa cerimônia, suas cinzas foram espalhadas pelo Oceano Pacífico.
O álbum Pearl foi lançado 6 meses após sua morte. O filme The Rose, com Bette Midler no papel de Janis Joplin, baseou-se em sua vida.
Ela hoje é lembrada por sua voz forte e marcante, bastante distante das influências folk mais comuns em sua época, e também pelos temas de dor e perda que escolhia para suas músicas. Texto: Wikipédia.
